THE COACHES

Mitch Major

Coach, Founder

Mitch Major is a 1989 graduate of Skaneateles High School where he captained the Lakers to a State Championship title.  He then went on the play 4 years of college hockey at Geneseo State where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  After college he went on to receive his Masters in Education at LeMoyne. 

Coach Major coached youth hockey for 6 years and then moved up to the varsity level where he was the assistant coach for the Skaneateles Lakers for 5 years.  In 2000 he took over the reins as head coach, a position he still currently holds.  In 2015, 2019, and 2023 Coach Major lead his varsity team to a New York State Championship.

A 9-time Coach of the Year in Section 3 and a 4-time New York State High School Coach of the Year, Coach Major currently teaches 6th grade at Skaneateles Middle School.  He resides in Skaneateles with his wife, Kristen, and 3 children, Charlie, Henry, and Cora.

Jeff Bobbett

Coach

Jeff Bobbett played varsity hockey at Skaneateles and graduated in 1993.  After high school, Coach Bobbett spent a post graduate year playing hockey for Northwood School and then attended SUNY Geneseo. Coach Bobbett received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from SUNY Oswego and a Master's Degree from SUNY Cortland. 

Coach Bobbett volunteered four years as a youth hockey coach, which was highligted  by an over time loss in the 2002 Bantam State Championship game.  In 2005, Coach Bobbett joined Coach Major's staff as an assistant coach where he specialized in developing defensemen.  Coach Bobbett helped lead the Lakers to a New York State Championship in 2015,2019, and 2023.

Coach Bobbett currently teaches 6th grade at Cazenovia Middle School and resides in Skaneateles with his wife Debbie, and 3 children, Ella, Jack, and Luke

John Ives

Goalie Coach

John Ives grew up playing goal in Ithaca and had a brief stint with the St. Lawrence University JV team.  He started coaching goalies with the Cortland-Homer HS team in 1986, was the goalie coach for the LeMoyne College hockey team from 2004-2010 when he took over the head coach position. During his tenure, the Dolphins played 5 straight UNYCHL tournament championship games, winning 3 of the 5.  Currently, John is the Goalie program coordinator and lead instructor for the Skaneateles Youth Hockey Association goalie development program. Coach Ives also joined the Skaneateles Lakers Varsity staff as their goalie coach, and played a pivotal role in the Lakers State Championship run in 2023 where the goalies had a combined .96 save percentage and less than 1 goal against per game.
